Delving into the background of Gideon Ray, also known as Mako, also known as Captain Mako, uncovered a number of disturbing facts.
Ray is a mutant, born with shark-like gills and teeth.
His parents, unable to cope with his differences, abandoned him to the tender ministrations of the Paragon City orphanage.
There he was relentlessly tormented by the other children resulting in several deaths and his departure. His movements are difficult to trace from there but for a time there were a number of sightings of a shark-like creature near the docks at Independence Point.
Accounts from this period indicate Gideon Ray was continuing to mutate rapidly.
The next trace of Ray's past I was able to locate was information regarding time he spent as part of the crew on a modern-day pirate ship called the Black Powder. The crewmen from this predatory vessel were the ones who nicknamed Gideon Ray "Mako" for the first time.
His viciousness was unmatched and he rose to the position of First Mate within a few months.
Shortly after that the captain of the Black Powder met with an untimely accident, leaving Mako in command of the vessel. Mako made the Rogue Isles his home port and did quite well for himself for a time. This was the first mention I found of his fascination with Sharkhead Island, as well.
At this time I believe it was simply the name that drew him to the spot.
When Arachnos arrived on the Rogue Isles in force, Captain Mako and the crew of the Black Powder fought against them. They avoided capture long enough to become bothersome to Lord Recluse himself, who eventually devised a trap to capture the pirate crew.
In the end, Captain Mako became one of Recluse's personal enforcers, hunting enemies of the state throughout the Rogue Isles. He requested and was given Sharkhead as his personal domain.
During his early days working for Arachnos, Captain Mako spent a great deal of time exploring Sharkhead Island. This is the first indication he was searching for something specific within its boundaries.
He also went on occasional raids with the crew of the Black Powder, but that part of his life was becoming less dominant.
It was around this time the individual known only as Barracuda came into Mako's life. No one is certain where she came from or what she is. The only thing I have determined beyond a shadow of a doubt is that her anger and ferocity seems to be a perfect match for Captain Mako.
During my incursions of the Rogue Isles I have spotted several creatures that resemble Barracuda. They are called "Coralax" by Arachnos but I have not been able to discover much more information about them. I believe they are in part human.
This matter deserves the attention of an agent full time. Discovering more about the connection between Barracuda and these coralax could make her capture easier in addition to providing information about many of the disappearances that have occurred over the years around Sharkhead Island.
Summing up the threat presented by Captain Mako is not as simple as it seems. While it is true that both he and Barracuda are primarily feral killers, it would be a mistake to dismiss them as physical threats only.
They are cunning and extremely difficult to capture and there is no telling what the upper limits are on either of their powers. Mako has apparently been mutating constantly since birth and Barracuda exhibits powers similar to creatures we know almost nothing about.
One thing I am fairly certain of is that Barracuda provided new information to Mako upon her arrival. Captain Mako's search activities seem to have narrowed since then. Discovering what it is they are seeking is the key to preventing these two from becoming one of the greatest threats in the Rogue Isles.
