Glimpse

A painfully shy child, Gerald Sampson often wished he could simply become invisible. Terrified of speaking to others, he spent his first days of school hidden in the coat closet. Finding him trembling in the corner, Gerald's heartless teacher Mrs. Louis thought she would cure his shyness by forcing him to lead morning announcements in front of the class. When the next morning came, he was physically marched to the blackboard by the cruel woman. Heart pounding in his ears, sweat pouring from his body, Gerald simply shook with terror in front of the class for a few moments before wetting himself and passing out. After this shocking display, the teacher simply dismissed him as a hopeless case and ignored him for the remainder of the year. Hoping to avoid dealing with this freakish child, Mrs. Louis passed him to the next grade. Only once more in her life did she ever give Gerald another thought.

By the end of elementary school, Gerald had perfected the art of remaining unnoticed. Unremarkable in every way, he seemed able to blend into the very walls. Through sheer force of will, Gerald found that he could divert attention from himself to such an extent that his teachers ceased to notice his existence at all. Concentrating on remaining unnoticed year after year, Gerald realized that he was developing an unusual skill. With focused energy, he could literally alter his physical appearance.

At first he was only able to fade, making himself slightly transparent. With practice, Gerald was soon able to shift between visible and invisible with little effort. By the end of high school he achieved perfect invisibility, fading completely from sight. Spending most of his time entirely hidden, Gerald was able to keenly observe everything happening around him. Little escaped his notice and from his secret observations, Gerald learned things about his fellow classmates and teachers that no one else could have known.

At first he was amused by this ability. Sneaking into teacher meetings, listening to girls gossip about their crushes, Gerald laughed at the silly things that seemed to occupy people's minds. But, as he watched from the shadows, he also began to see the deceptions, betrayals, lies, and cruelty of the people he observed. In particular, he began to follow a group of boys in his class. Known as bullies, these young men were sadistic and dumb - a frightening combination to Gerald. Trailing the group's leader, Gerald watched as he tormented younger students, stole from his coach, harassed one particularly shy girl, taunted the kids on the chess team, and generally made everyone around him feel worthless and small.

Gerald became obsessed with watching this bully. He observed teacher after teacher ignore the problem, letting the bullies terrorize the school with impunity. With growing rage, Gerald realized that no one would ever stand up for those who couldn't protect themselves. Gerald's repressed anger simmered for months. One evening after school, Gerald trailed the bully to the playground. At the swings the bully found the shy young woman he often targeted. Thinking they were alone, the bully's aggression towards the girl became crude and he moved towards her with unclear intentions.

Finally unable to stand by and watch any longer, Gerald materialized in the bully's peripheral vision only to instantly disappear. His sudden appearance caused the bully to pause. After some confusion, he continued advancing on the terror-stricken girl. Gerald again appeared and vanished, startling the bully, but this time, Gerald became visible directly in front of the bully, where he landed a solid punch before vaporizing. After discovering the effectiveness of this tactic, Gerald began assaulting the bully in this way again and again, leaving the bully no target to retaliate against. Reveling in his newfound power, Gerald let loose a lifetime of pent up feelings and beat the bully to death with his bare hands.

Realizing the potential of his abilities, Gerald vowed to forever more protect those who could not fight for themselves. Believing he was working to end all cruelty of the world, he began eliminating those who preyed on the weak. Acting as judge and jury, any moment of cruelty he witnessed was met with a swift death. He sought out all those who had wronged him as a child including Mrs. Louis. He allowed her to see him for only a moment before her final breath. In his twisted mind, Gerald grew to believe that everyone had the capacity for true cruelty. Even the weak he set out to protect turned into bullies when given the chance. And so, he decided that his duty was to destroy mankind. Only with the end of the human race could he wipe the earth clean of the evil in our hearts. In his mind, it was through our destruction that we could be saved.

Now willing to pursue this goal by any means necessary, Gerald became known across Paragon as a heartless killer who would unnerve his enemies by allowing them to see him ever so briefly before dealing a fatal blow. This tactic won Gerald the nickname Glimpse, for his victims only ever caught a glimpse of him, and that sight was to be their last. Only with the help of the heroes of Paragon was Glimpse captured and imprisoned in the Zig where he is prevented from using his powers. Unable to do the one thing that gives him comfort, Glimpse allows his rage to build as he awaits release.

ORIGIN: Glimpse gained his powers through sheer force of will. Even Glimpse himself does not fully understand the mysterious Magic behind his ability to transform into an invisible assassin.

PRIMARY POWER: With his fast, accurate strikes, Glimpse has become a master of Martial Arts . This primary power allows him to devastate foes in hand to hand combat, landing critical hits when striking from the shadows.

SECONDARY POWER: With his unrivaled powers of concentration, Glimpse is not only able to render himself invisible, but is also able to speed up the actual healing processes of his own body. This increased Regeneration is incredibly fast, leaving him with very little downtime.

AVATAR SELECTION: Glimpse is still a young man, toned by years of prowling, hunting, and fighting.

COSTUME CREATION: Accepting his role as unseen protector of the weak, Glimpse wears simple, loose clothing. His chain wrapped fists allow him to deal deadly blows with no other weapons needed. Shortly after leaving high school, he tattooed his chest with scenes of cruelty to remind himself of his mission.

BREAK OUT: Knowing that he cannot defeat the heroes of Paragon City on his own, Glimpse sees his breakout from the Zig as an opportunity to utilize the power of Arachnos. With the heroes standing in the way of his ultimate plan, Glimpse will work with Lord Recluse until he is able to wrest power for himself.
