Ghede

mastermind3.jpgBorn Lyse La Croix and given the familiar nickname Tee-do, the girl who would eventually become Ghede was raised along the bayous of rural Louisiana by her highly respected grandmother, Grande Brigitte. Though her grandmother was clearly beloved, she was also feared. Revered by the religious community of New Orleans, Grande Brigitte was believed to be much more than a mere mortal.

According to Brigitte's followers, Tee-do's bloodline directly linked to the powerful loa or spirits that dominate the voudoun pantheon. Under the supreme-being Bondye, these elemental spirits often posses the faithful, endowing them with godlike powers. For most practitioners this possession is temporary, but the La Croix family was seen as the human manifestation of these loa. Upon accepting her power, Tee-do's grandmother was believed to have transformed into the corporeal manifestation of the voudoun guardian of graves. With this blood in her veins, the entire village believed Tee-do had the ability to become the most powerful voudoun priestess ever known. Despite her dark powers, Grande Brigitte was a loving, gracious woman who, when not helping those who sought religious counsel, quietly passed her sacred knowledge onto her granddaughter. Surrounded by the smoldering heat, spice laden air, and raucous music of her close-knit village, Tee-do's childhood was a sheltered, happy experience.

mastermind2.jpgIt was only when she began to venture from this haven protected by the tangled, dark swamps that Tee-do began to see how outsiders viewed her family and her religion. Embarrassed by depictions of her people as superstitious heathens, Tee-do began to distance herself from her own community. Eventually fleeing to Paragon University, Tee-do created a new persona, introducing herself as Lisa to her classmates and professors.

No matter how she tried to forget her past, it was impossible to ignore her burgeoning power of persuasion. Purely by accident, Tee-do learned she could simply suggest something and it would be done. Fearful that it would expose her voudoun roots, she desperately tied to avoid using this subtle but dangerous ability. In addition to her newfound power, Tee-do also began to experience an insatiable thirst for knowledge. More than a simple compulsion, this drive to learn felt like a constant need gnawing at her soul.

This scholarly obsession, coupled with her spindly frame, unusual height, and thick Cajun accent marked Tee-do as an immediate target for derision. The mindless taunts of her classmates quickly descended into racial slurs and physical intimidation. After months of ridicule, the inevitable happened. While she was walking home on a moonless night after an extended library session, a gang of boys confronted Tee-do along the darkened street. Intimidation led to a savage beating as the boys stole her purse and bag full of important books. Tee-do's shame about her background shifted to righteous anger under their aggressive assault.

mastermind1.jpgYears of humiliation and repression snapped and in the heat of the moment she uttered a spell taught to her by her grandmother, a spell even Brigitte feared the power of. Much more than a simple spell, the dark words uttered by Tee-do triggered the latent power in her blood, transforming her into the intensely powerful loa of the dead.

With an intoxicating sense of absolute power suddenly flooding her body, Tee-do--now the earthly manifestation of the mistress of the dead--turned against those who tormented her. With a swift, instinctual motion, Ghede grasped the arm of one of her attackers and drained his very soul into her own. Devouring his soul only heightened her sense of supreme power as she absorbed all his knowledge while increasing her own strength.

Once soulless, the husk that was once a man submitted entirely to her will, fulfilling her every command without hesitation. Able to summon and dismiss this soulless creature, Ghede found she could turn him against those who were once his friends. Toying with them before stealing their souls, she realized that this power was the key to satiating her compulsion to gain limitless knowledge. Her search for genuine omnipotence encouraged Ghede to seek her professors, brilliant men and women at Paragon University, from whom she stole knowledge, ever expanding her retinue of undead minions.

ORIGIN: Ghede gained her power through the Magic taught to her by her grandmother.

PRIMARY POWER: With the ability to command the forces of death, Ghede's primary power is Necromancy.

SECONDARY POWER: Able to draw power directly from the world of the dead, Ghede's secondary power is Dark Miasma. With this dark power, Ghede can drain the life force from her opponents with ease.

AVATAR SELECTION: Ghede was a tall, unnaturally thin Creole woman. Now that she has transformed into the loa of the undead, her skin has taken on the pallor of death.

COSTUME CREATION: Embracing her role as mistress of the dead, Ghede wears the traditional costume of this loa. Though usually a man, death is blind to gender and so she adopts the dark suit of her position.

mastermind4.jpgBREAK OUT: Now that she has been freed from the Zig, Ghede seeks only to fulfill her obsession for knowledge, stealing the souls of all those she encounters. Ghede realizes that she can utilize the protection of Arachnos to fulfill her own desires. Willing to work within the system as long as it benefits her, Ghede now wanders the streets like death itself, a glutton who consumes all before her with indiscriminate hunger.
