As the daughter of an anthropologist, Caroline McBain saw more of the world before she was five than most people see in their whole lives. In her study of world mythology, Caroline's mother took the family from one end of the earth to the other, following her interest in cross-cultural legends. Dr. McBain's interest in the possible link between ancient myths and modern day super-powered heroes eventually brought her and her family to a group of villages in southern Egypt nestled along the fertile flood plains of the Nile. The inhabitants of these minute villages had unusually complex mythologies about the earth's creation.
While Caroline lived with her family in one of these small villages, she began to sense things that no one around her seemed to notice. Initially she would sense minor shifts in her surroundings, slight tremors through the earth. Not long after she turned 15, Caroline started experiencing visceral responses to the world around her. With every plant she trampled beneath her feet she could hear a wail of pain. Every animal killed for dinner mirrored its pain in her own body. Unable to explain these events, she suddenly felt entirely out of control. Continually assailed by this sensory input, Caroline became increasingly agitated and the locals avoided her, believing she was mentally disturbed.
As she struggled to master these new sensations, Caroline also realized that she was developing super powers. She explored her new abilities and found that she could control nature in the same way that nature could affect her. Proud of her skills, she began showing off to the few children in the village willing to play with her.
At first, her powers impressed the local villagers. Able to make plants grow from barren ground, she was praised for her obvious closeness to the earth. The village elders associated her with their ancient fertility goddess, Hathor, and those that once shunned her now welcomed her into their community. Half concerned, half fearful, her parents assured Caroline that they would love her no matter what strange skills she developed.
Unfortunately, local interest eventually turned into fear when the children realized her powers could be used for far more nefarious purposes. By simply reaching out to the minds of other beings, Caroline could cause intense pain and suffering. As her powers grew with every passing month, so did her sphere of influence. Caroline opened her mind and body to an exponentially expanding number of living beings. Sensing the birth, death, sorrow, anger, fear, pain, and joy of every plant and animal for hundreds of miles, Caroline was soon unable to process the vast sensations bombarding her young mind and body.
Rather than encouraging empathetic kindness to all living things, this sensory overload forced Caroline to develop a profound detachment from the very life force from which she drew her powers. Constantly overwhelmed by the psychic and sensory input of all life on Earth, Caroline simply turned off her own feelings and learned to read the signs of nature without any emotional engagement. Hoping to shut off the flood of sensations, she turned to the other aspect embodied by the ancient Hathor. Although known as a goddess of creation, Hathor was also known to transform into the 'Eye of Ra', becoming her alter ego Sakhmet, the goddess who sought the destruction of all l ife .
Embracing her destructive powers, Caroline learned that she could bring a thorny plant from the dry earth to wrap any creature in an immobilizing tangle of vines. Held or psionically damaged creatures immediately ceased intruding into her mind and body. Finding relief in their death, Caroline realized that the only way to achieve inner peace would be to wipe out all living creatures on our small planet. Entirely switching off her emotional link to the world around her, she set out to fulfill her destructive plan, beginning with the parents who had given her nothing but love.
Sweeping across the Middle East leaving a swath of death and destruction in her wake, the woman now known as Sakhmet eventually set her sights on the capital of heroism, Paragon City . Entering the city with confidence, she released her deadly wrath upon the people of Steel Canyon , bringing hundreds of citizens to their knees before the heroes of the Freedom Phalanx subdued her. Sahkmet's incarceration in the Zig's high security wing cut short her wanton destruction, but her anguished drive to destroy all life continues to grow with every hour.
